China Opportunity
Notwithstanding the impact of the Asian financial crisis, China's annual average
GDP growth over the past five years (1995-1999) was 8.8% per year, one of the highest in
the world. This growth rate exceeded the rest of Asia by about 5 percentage points, and
the rest of emerging market economies by about 6 percentage points.
In addition, China's domestic securities market is one of the top performing stock
markets worldwide this year, up 87% (in US$) so far this year (Forbes, October 1, 2001).
In purchasing power parity terms, China's GDP has already exceeded that of Japan's, and is
second only to the US. Surprisingly in recent years, China's growth volatility has been
among the lowest in emerging economies. This might contribute to the fact that unlike most
other Asian countries, China is largely a domestic demand driven economy, similar to that
of U.S.
